Sean
We’re running a series on our instructors – but the side you don’t see in the studio every day. Get to know our team even better through these interviews and hopefully we can all connect on an even deeper level.
Sean is our resident self care expert and we got his recommendations on how to come out of this looking our best (and tannest). Read through his responses for how to come out of this with your best hair and skin.
How is everything going?
It’s good, it’s definitely more mentally draining than anything else. I went from having a few different jobs (something doing all three in one day) to just being home all day. I was enjoying life before so it’s tough not to be able to do any of those things anymore. But I’ve been able to take the time to see what’s worth time and energy and really wake up for myself everyday.
What’s your day to day like?
I’ve been sleeping a lot and I always go on at least one walk a day. I live with my boyfriend David and we’ve been playing a ton of board games — we love Clue, Sorry, Life, and Uno. David has a spin bike so we’ll teach other classes and I also teach a few classes on Zoom every week (DM @seanmkerr to join!).
I’ve actually started reading and am very into The Kind Worth Killing right now. We cook a lot, we watch a lot of movies, and I FaceTime with my friends and family.
Most people probably know this, but you are also a hairdresser and do the hair of a lot of our staff and riders. What can we do during this time to come out of this time with beautiful hair?
Coconut oil!! Get a jar of it and microwave it until it’s a liquid. Stand in your shower (it’s messy) and massage it in your hair starting with the bottom and working your way up (but keep it off your scalp). Put your oiled hair in a clip and let it sit for an hour then wash it out.
So for at home workouts and when we’re back at SPARKCYCLE — how should I put my hair up when I’m working out?
The most important thing is to change how you put your hair up. Braid it, move your ponytail around, and never, ever, ever do a bun. Buns are made for baking not sweating! And for a ponytail, use a scrunchie (it causes less breakage).
I can see my roots/I have split ends/I’m debating adding an accent color. Help?
Embrace the roots. Put the box dye down. Don’t cut your own hair. Now isn’t the time to give yourself bangs.
And everyone knows how amazing your skin is. What’s your routine?
I wash my face with an oatmeal light exfoliant (I use St. Ives) and leave it on for at least a minute. Then I rinse with warm water (gotta keep the pores open), put on hyaluronic acid, follow it with a gel face lotion, then put on a rosewater spray, and lastly jade roller under my eyes.
Can you give us a rundown of face masks and what you do?
A clay mask is best for acne, but make sure you use a little spatula for application (don’t use a brush). I love a sheet mask when I’m on the go — I put one on and then ice roll on top of it. It’s super refreshing and also great after you workout; you can sub it for a eucalyptus towel!
I love to make a coffee mask with coffee grounds, honey, and coconut oil. It’s super energizing and brightening and you can put it on your lips too as an exfoliant.
If I can recommend anything it’s an ice roller. Put it in the freezer and use it all the time.
What about self tanners?
I’ve found the best combination: You mix Skenerals Onyx Extra Dark with Jergens Instant Sun. They’re both a mousse and you HAVE to wear a mit or a glove. You can get both from Amazon (linked) or any drugstore.
And any advice (aside from the amazing hair/skin advice above)?
You have to be able to enjoy yourself and laugh at yourself. You have to be your biggest fan and root yourself on. It’s mentally really difficult and if you feel that, it’s okay to be selfish and take what you need. Take each day as it comes.
Hang in there. Tan yourself, do a face mask, get an ice roller. We got this.
